Basic Roping

At Montana Cowboy School you'll begin with the basics of roping and learn everything you can from the ground up.

Keep in mind that this class is intended to teach you the very basics of roping and that you'll need a lot of continuous practice and practical application to master the art of roping.

You'll begin with some FUN basic exercises intended to allow you to throw a correct loop and then you'll move on to the roping dummies.

Depending on your progress in the class with basic horsemanship and riding skills, you may have an opportunity to participate in breakaway roping.

Calf Roping In the Arena

In addition to calf roping, you would also be introduced to Team Roping.

Team Roping is the classic American sport that has its roots in the talents of the western working cowboy. Working the range doctoring and gathering cattle required roping and riding skills.  It didn't take very long before competitions soon became a part of what's referred to as "ranch rodeos".

The sport has now evolved into an exciting timed event contest enjoyed by thousands of team roping enthusiasts and spectators each and every year.

Basically, Team Roping is a timed event where two mounted riders (ropers) catch a steer with their ropes.

The first roper (the header), rides up to the steer and throws a rope (loop) around the steer's horns or neck.  The other end of the rope is wrapped (dallied) around the saddle horn and the roper then tows the steer behind the horse.

The second roper (the heeler) rides up to the steer in tow and throws a loop around the steer's hind legs.  The other end of the rope is dallied around the saddle horn and the run is completed when the header turns to face the steer.

Team Roping In the Arena

Your success at roping will require a lot of additional time beyond what we can teach in the brief time that you'll be at Montana Cowboy School.  Rest assured that while attending Montana Cowboy School you will have fun while learning the basics, but keep in mind that this class work is intended to be a basic introduction to the overall sport of roping.
